I stumbled upon Montreal based self-taught visual artist & graphic designer Kaylan Michael’s captivating Afrofuturism collages and I fell head over heels. If you are like me and you are into the cultural aesthetic of Afrofuturism then Kylan Michael’s work will entice you too. Michael who is the founder of Lost in the Island uses colourful and vibrant colours to create her mixed-media collages of African inspired celestial Goddess mixed with futuristic and spiritual details. Originally from Africa, Michael credits African art and afro futuristic art styles as playing a role in her creativity as well as her love for patterns, colours and designs that represent her roots.
Each piece is a part of me that I share”, says Kaylan. “I love the fact that each person can see different things in one piece of art and relate to it. Some artists I look up to are Jean-Michel Basquiat, Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, and a New York-based artist Kehinde Wiley. I love the energy behind their work, it truly inspires me.
